Leadership retreats for tech teams

You don't conquer fear. You build a relationship with it.

The Mind Summit Lab takes leadership teams out of the conference room and onto real rock — where fear shows up honestly, and you learn to perform while it's happening. Then you take that skill back to work on Monday.

Not trust falls. Not a ropes course with name tags. Real climbing, real height, real lessons.

The idea

Fear is a skill.

Every hard decision you've ever made happened inside a nervous system. Most leadership training pretends that isn't true. We start there instead.

Deliberately uncomfortable. That's the whole curriculum.

i

Fear is information, not failure

Your body reacts to exposure before your brain finishes the risk assessment. That's not weakness — it's data arriving early. We teach you to read it instead of fighting it.

ii

You can't think your way out of a stress response you've never practiced

Slides don't rewire autonomic reactions. Sixty feet up a wall does. The rock gives you the one thing a workshop can't: a genuine stress response, on demand, in a controlled setting.

iii

The rock doesn't care about your title

Up there, the VP and the new grad get the same honest feedback. Teams come back with better trust, clearer communication, and a shared language for pressure — because they earned it together.

How it works

The arc of every retreat.

One pattern, scaled to your format — whether it's an afternoon or three days.

01

Climb

You get on the rock. Top-rope, real height, real exposure. Professional guides, proper gear — and nobody's watching your job title up there.

02

Notice

What does your body do when it gets scared? Shaky hands, tunnel vision, the urge to rush. We slow down and name it — that's where the learning starts.

03

Regulate

Breathing, pacing, decision protocols under load. Practical tools for your nervous system that work at sixty feet — and in the boardroom.

04

Transfer

Structured debrief: what did fear do to your judgment today, and what changes on Monday? You leave with tools, not just memories.

Your guide

Hi, I'm Kelly.

Portrait of Kelly Ann Pawlak

Physicist by day. Professional volunteer for scary things the rest of the time.

I'm a theoretical physicist (Ph.D., UC Santa Barbara) working as a Technical Solutions Executive for the US Government at Quantinuum. I've spent over a decade doing quantum research — which turns out to be excellent training for staying calm when the math gets scary.

Outside the lab, I do scary things on purpose. I'm a rock climber with first ascents to my name — including a 200-foot new route in the Alabama Hills — and a paraglider pilot. I started The Mind Summit Lab because the most useful thing climbing ever taught me had nothing to do with climbing.

Legit climbing background — first ascents, multi-pitch, real exposure
USHPA P2 paraglider pilot — I practice what I preach about fear
Wilderness First Responder (in progress) — medical training for the backcountry
Licensed guiding company — all instruction runs through professional guides, real insurance, real permits
Fair questions

Before you ask.

Do we need climbing experience?
No. Most participants have never touched rock. Day one starts on top-rope — you're secured from above the entire time — and everything progresses at your pace. The only prerequisite is a willingness to be a beginner in front of your colleagues, which is kind of the point.
Is it safe?
Yes — deliberately so. All climbing instruction runs through a licensed guiding company with professional guides, and the progression is top-rope first, always. Helmets and gear are provided, and every challenge is challenge by choice: you pick your edge, nobody pushes you past it. Scared is the curriculum; unsafe is not.
What should our team expect?
A day that feels nothing like a workshop. You'll climb, you'll notice what fear does to your body and your decisions, you'll learn tools to regulate it, and you'll debrief what it all means for how you lead. Expect to be tired, a little exhilarated, and weirdly closer to your coworkers.
Where do retreats run?
Pinnacles, Tahoe, Yosemite, and other crags within reach of the Bay Area — chosen for your group size, season, and experience level. Overnight expeditions use premium lodging near the climbing areas.
Who is this for — and not for?
For: leadership teams who want genuine growth, not a checkbox offsite. Execs, VPs, directors, senior leads — anyone whose job involves deciding under pressure.

Not for: anyone looking for a comfortable afternoon. If your team wants trust falls and a cooking class, book the cooking class. This is the other thing.
Can you customize for our team?
Yes. Every retreat starts with an intake call where we learn your team's dynamics, goals, and anxieties — then the curriculum is built around them. Add-ons like pre-retreat assessments and 1:1 follow-up coaching are available too.
Your move

Your team's relationship with fear starts with a conversation.

Tell me about your team — size, goals, timeline. I'll tell you honestly whether a retreat is the right move, and which format fits. No pitch decks, no pressure.
